Interesting news from Italy - fascinating!!!

Common toads appear to be able to sense an impending earthquake and will flee their colony days before the seismic activity strikes. The evidence comes from a population of toads which left their breeding colony three days before an earthquake that struck L'Aquila in Italy in 2009.How toads sensed the quake is unclear, but most breeding pairs and males fled. They reacted despite the colony being 74km from the quake's epicentre, say biologists in the Journal of Zoology. It is hard to objectively…See More

Toadlet emergance coming soon !

WELCOME TO YOUR TOAD VOLUNTEER COMMUNITY NETWORK!

The Western leopard Toad is an endangered amphibian threatened with extinction. Populations occur mainly in Cape Town, all living in urban suburbs coming into constant contact with humans.
Almost entirely dependant on the actions of urban landowners for their survival, a strong volunteer presence is needed to monitor and save toads during their two big migrations in August & December.

Click on the tab of the closest suburb to you and join your social network. Here you will receive updates on toad related activities in your suburb, news and blogs of fellow toad enthusiasts.
If you do not live near any of these areas, join this Network!

2009 BREEDING SEASON RESULTS

The 2009 Western leopard Toad breeding season finished on a high note, with a total sum of 1125 live toads being moved off roads and 195 roadkills being recorded.
These figures show a similar ratio in live/dead toads, however an increase in volunteers lead to many more toads being observed as in 2008.

A total of 115 volunteers participated in various breeding areas across Cape Town, covering more terrain and identifying new breeding sites.

A total of 27 new breeding sites were identified this year increasing the number of known breeding sites into the sixties.

Thank you to all who participated and gave of their time to assist!
Toadlet emergence is on its way so get prepared for the second big saving event of the species!

Herschel Girls to the rescue in Tokai

So it had been a strange season in Tokai thus far, with a handful of toads migrating hear and there across Tokai Rd from Forest Glade into the Golf Course.

Nothing major had taken place and local volunteers were on their toes waiting in suspense for the big move to follow through.

The 23rd of August arrived and toad crossing had picked up considerably over previous nights.

Meanwhile across town, an excited group of girls from Herschel Girls Junior School arrived at Die Oog… Continue

89 toads in one season, impressive for a 9 year old!

Ben Scott (9) of Rondebsoch must be one of our keenest most enthusiast volunteers around.

Originally introduced to leopard toads at a public awareness meeting held at Edith Stevens Wetland Park, Ben holds records for spotting the most toads this year (89), being the most avid volunteer on the street and consistently finds toads in the strangest of places!

One such incident unfolded on a dark August night in the chill of a… Continue

Do lunar events influence toad migration?

So the question of lunar events and their potential influence on amphibian migration, more specifically in our case, with leopard toads arose in June at a committee meeting.

News of studies conducted in Europe suggested that species of salamander and toad were moving in time with the full moon cycles.

This theory was tested in Noordhoek this last August when toads made thier… Continue
